StandTall.

StandTall is a motivational programme developed to capitalise on the research conducted by Massey University in 2006 which found KidsCan StandTall programmes increase attendance at school, pride and self-esteem. ‘StandTall’ provides inspirational and challenging opportunities, underpinned by core values for children who don’t experience life beyond the corner dairy. Successful New Zealand business, sports, arts and entertainment personalities act as StandTall Ambassadors/Role Models developing positive relationships with children and the school they attend.

StandTall provides a support network for all participants through college and into early adulthood so they can reach their full potential in life and become positive role models for their own communities. In 2009 a research study designed to evaluate the capabilities of students from low decile schools participating in StandTall confirmed that encouraging children to believe in their own potential has a long-term affect on their motivation and skill development

The main results of the research show significant developments in the total self-esteem of the students, with many positive long-term benefits such as increased willingness to participate, leadership skills, public speaking abilities, confidence in where they come from and choices and opportunities for their future.

The implications of the study findings revolve around the benefits for children in low decile participated in capability enhancing programmes such as StandTall. There is significant evidence of capability enhancement and that their choices and opportunities have been expanded. This is reinforced by interviews with parents, caregivers, teachers and school principals.

Because the research is a longitudinal study further results will be revealed in future interviews with the students. The aim is to track the children in 2010 and hopefully beyond to determine how their capabilities develop over a long period of time.
