Coronavirus: Kids going back to school hungry as parents lose jobs in lockdown
“Do we pay rent this week or do we buy food?”
That’s the question Melanie, a mother of two from Kaeo, has asked herself each week of lockdown.
Her husband is a labourer and she'd just left her retail job to launch an online craft business when the pandemic hit, so neither of them have had an income for the past seven weeks.
They’ve scraped by on jobseekers’ allowance, but once rent and bills have been paid, there’s little left over for food - sometimes just enough to buy bread and milk.
