Kiwi charities join forces for Red Socks Day

Wednesday, June 19, 2013

Keeping thousands of small feet warm this winter, with Sir Peter Blake’s lucky red socks, is the dream of two high-profile New Zealand charities that are joining forces for this year’s Red Socks Day.

Over the next month, the Sir Peter Blake Trust and KidsCan will be running a special campaign called ‘Wear a pair, share a pair’. The idea is that, for $10, Kiwis will be able to purchase two pairs of Red Socks, one pair to wear themselves for Red Socks Day on 12 July, and a pair to share with a KidsCan child in need.

Sir Peter Blake Trust CEO, Shelley Campbell, says, “Every year on Red Socks Day, we celebrate a time when an entire nation came together, and donned their Red Socks, to support Sir Peter and Team New Zealand to win the America’s Cup. This year we wanted to be able to share that incredible story, with a whole new generation of young Kiwis, to inspire them to stand tall and dare to achieve their dreams, just like Sir Peter did.”

Julie Chapman, KidsCan CEO and a 2008 Sir Peter Blake Trust Leadership Award winner, said it was fantastic to be working with the Trust to provide Red Socks to children at KidsCan schools around the country.

“We’re hoping that Kiwis will once again band together for a great cause, and buy a pair of Red Socks, as part of the ‘Wear a pair, share a pair’ campaign, as there are so many KidsCan kids who would love a pair of Red Socks this winter. We’re really excited to be teaming up the Sir Peter Blake Trust to also share with our schools Sir Peter’s inspiring story of aiming high and achieving your dreams against all odds,” added Chapman.

‘Wear a pair, share a pair’ Red Socks can be purchased for $10 from the Sir Peter Blake Trust website - www.sirpeterblaketrust.org - until 11 July. Red Socks will be delivered to selected KidsCan schools ahead of Red Socks Day on 12 July. Red Socks Day concludes the annual Sir Peter Blake Trust Leadership Week, which runs from 5-12 July.
