Signed by Pink!
Pink - one of the world's biggest pop stars - has signed a Northland artist's glittering portrait of herself, all to raise money for KidsCan. And you can get your hands on it!
The massive 2.4 x 1.4m image was created by Jessie Rose, and on Saturday night, backstage at her Auckland concert, Pink added her autograph. Her team said she loved it.
“It’s awesome!” Jessie says. “Quite a crazy feeling to know she was there, standing in front of it. It’s everything I hoped for. I’m just stoked because I know what it means for the auction.”
The way Jessie created the piece is jaw-dropping. She paints in glue, so the image is only revealed when she throws handfuls of glitter at it.
“It’s a bit of a magic trick!” she says. “There’s a lot more to it than it looks. You can’t just smudge the glue around and hope it’s going to look right.”
Jessie runs an art school for kids in Whangarei, and she chose Pink because she thinks she’s a great role model for her students.
“She’s not afraid to be different. I think she’s got guts, and she stands up for what she believes in.”
Pink supports an American charity like KidsCan, which feeds hungry kids.
“I feel like they’re the innocent ones in this messed up world that we live in and we need to look after them and nurture them,” Jessie says.
“There’s a huge poverty problem in New Zealand. Here in Northland especially - it’s in our own backyard. And I know how hard it is. Back in the day when my daughter was young I was on a benefit. It’s way harder now.”
“I just like what KidsCan does. It’s really practical.”
