My Kitchen Rules New Zealand semi-finalists Jay Wanakore and Sarah Chase have joined forces with KidsCan to help children living in hardship.

The Waikato couple have become ambassadors for the charity, and both have a passion for food and their three children.

Sarah attended Crawshaw School in Hamilton as a pupil and saw first-hand children going without the basics such as food, adequate clothing and basic healthcare.

KidsCan now supports Crawshaw School, which has been receiving KidsCan's practical food, clothing, and health support programmes since 2013.

"Our school is in a low socioeconomic area and many of our families, even with the very best of intentions, struggle at times to provide the necessities to their tamariki," said principal Jill Littlewood.

"In the past, not having enough food in the house has impacted on attendance and affected their concentration, learning and behaviour.

"Now, with KidsCan, we always have food that we can offer - you should see the smiles on childrens' faces when they see a selection of food items offered."

The KidsCan Food for Kids programme feeds over 20,000 children at school every week, and over 16 million food items have been distributed to low decile schools around the country since the charity was started in 2005.
