KidsCan Dental Programme

Helping tamariki and their whānau build healthy smiles for life

Nau mai, haere mai. We’re so glad you’re here.

We look forward to connecting with you and your whānau about KidsCan. If you’d like to stay informed, you can receive updates from KidsCan by signing up below.

Your child’s early childhood centre or kōhanga reo has given you a whānau dental pack to take home.

It’s part of our new Dental Programme, created with support from the New Zealand Dental Association (NZDA) to help tamariki and their whānau build strong toothbrushing habits — at home and at their centre.

Centres or kōhanga reo can roll out the full programme from June, but you can start great routines with your child right now.

How the KidsCan Dental Programme Works

At the centre

Tamariki brush their teeth once a day, supported by teachers or kaiako.
KidsCan provides everything needed: toothbrushes, toothpaste, holders and fun learning resources.
Toothbrushes are labelled and stored safely and used during normal daily routines.

At home

Your centre or kōhanga reo can order whānau dental packs for you to take home every three months.
Each pack includes toothbrushes and toothpaste for both children and adults.
If you need more, you can ask your centre for a top‑up anytime.

Brushing your teeth with your child or children helps create stronger habits and makes the routine even more enjoyable and rewarding - for them, and for you.

Why brushing matters

Healthy teeth help children focus, learn and feel confident.

But many children in Aotearoa are not brushing their teeth often enough, and this can cause serious problems. Last year, more than 31,000 children needed teeth removed because of decay.

The good news is that brushing every day really helps. When we tested this dental programme, we saw a big increase in the number of children brushing their teeth regularly.

What whānau and kaiako are saying

How you can help

Your centre or kōhanga reo will be deciding soon whether to take part. Your voice matters.
You can:

  • Chat to your teachers, kaiako, and with other parents, about your interest

  • Ask your centre or kōhanga reo how they plan to get involved

We’d love to see every KidsCan partner centre and kōhanga reo offer this dental programme.

In the meantime, brushing together at home is the best way to give your child a confident, healthy start.
