Our early childhood programme

"Early childhood is when the brain is forming, so to know that they’re arriving in a warm jacket and shoes, and the food that they need is here. That’s amazing."

The early years are our most formative, shaping our ability to learn, think and grow

The right nutrition, a stimulating environment, and opportunities to play – all of these are key to healthy brain development during those all-important early years. KidsCan’s early childhood education (ECE) programme aims to ensure children living in hardship can not only attend pre-school but thrive there.

KidsCan partners with over 500 early childhood centres and kōhanga reo

We support low-equity centres by providing free food, clothing and health products. We feed every child with a daily healthy lunch from recipes children love, including spaghetti bolognese and chicken stir-fry, complemented with fruit and yoghurt. Every child also receives a warm jacket, shoes and socks, dinosaur gumboots, headlice treatment and a comb.

Waikato University research found the programme is making a ‘valuable difference’ to children’s wellbeing. Good nutrition and warm clothing mean children are more engaged in learning, with increased energy and attention spans.

We also have a separate food programme which is funded by the New Zealand Government for up to 10,000 preschoolers. The KidsCan ECE Food for Kids Programme is a free food programme offered to 2 to 5-year-olds attending eligible early childhood education (ECE) centres around Aotearoa.

It’s made a huge impact on our families. The smile on their faces when they get a jacket, when you hand them some new shoes; the full bellies and the warm tummies, just the way the children are – that’s the difference that KidsCan makes for us.

Food

  • icons-children-red

    Nutritious meals

Centres can choose from a range of recipes that children love. The menu includes a vegetarian-friendly option that can also be made egg-free, catering to a variety of dietary needs.
  • icons-snacks-blue

    Meal preparation

Centre staff involved in preparing the meals complete a compulsory online course. KidsCan’s suppliers deliver fresh, healthy ingredients to centres every week or fortnight, so staff can put together easy-to-prepare lunches.

    Balanced meals

We provide fruit and yoghurt to complement lunches. The menu is created with the input of a nutritionist and the Heart Foundation to ensure it offers a balance of protein, carbohydrates and vegetables.

How our support works

  • Apply & assess

Fill out an application form if you are a low equity, community-based ECE centre or kōhanga reo so we can better understand the support you and your tamariki require. Centres are then assessed and welcomed onboard, based on available funding.
  • Access

Once you've been accepted into our programme, you'll have access to food, clothing and health products – and the ongoing support of our friendly team.
  • Order & receive

Order everything through our portal – from nutritious, child-friendly recipes to jackets, shoes, and health products.

Apply for KidsCan support

We’re sorry to say that due to overwhelming demand we are unable to accept any new applications for support from early childhood education (ECE) centres or kōhanga reo.

We will re-open applications when we have cleared our waiting list. Thank you for your patience.

At this stage, centres and kōhanga reo that are a part of the funded Government-funded ECE Food For Kids programme are unable to access KidsCan’s clothing, shoes and health products, because the funding is for food only. Thank you for your understanding.
