A lasting gift for future generations

I’ve been supporting KidsCan for a number of years now, and for me, it’s always come back to one simple thing – children are the future.

When you’re deciding who to give to, you have to choose a cause you feel connected to. You can’t give to everything, so you need to be a bit thoughtful about it. For me, it’s children.

What I’ve always liked about KidsCan is how practical the support is. You can picture it – food, jackets, shoes. You know where your money is going, and that matters.

I had a very lucky upbringing, and it’s quite sad to think that not every child in New Zealand has that. Some kids are going without things they need, and you think – what can we be doing about that?

For me, it’s been about giving regularly. I set up a monthly donation and I’ve increased it over time. Over the years, I’ve also become more deliberate about where I give. My partner and I used to say yes to everything, but you quickly realise you need to be a bit more considered. KidsCan is one that’s stayed.

For me, it comes back to wanting kids to have a fair chance. To be able to go to school and focus on learning – not worrying about their next meal or whether they’ve got the right shoes.

If you’re thinking about leaving a gift in your will, I’d say it’s worth looking into sooner rather than later. It’s actually quite straightforward, and it’s a way to make a difference beyond your lifetime.
